Guiding Principle
“There will be nothing left for the generations to come if we are not sustainable in what we do and a simple rule to be sustainable is to give back to nature what you take from it in the same form; if that is not possible then in a form that is still useful or at least not harmful.”
Factors We Consider
(i) How much air, soil and water pollution does the production and processing of raw material to finishing products generate? (ii) How much employment does our work generate?
How and What We Do...
(i) Fibre of Fabric --Organic cotton, bamboo fibre (ii) Spinning and Weaving of Fibre --This is done in two ways: (a) Through machines, i.e. modern hi-tech process like automatic spinning and auto looms (b) Through human power --Here both spinning and weaving are done by people. Such fabric is called khadi.
Why Khadi…..- Employment in spinning: 100 people spin the same amount of yarn through hand spinning units as 2 people with a automatic spinning machine
- Employment in weaving: 10 people weave the same meter of fabric through hand weaving loom as 1 person on automatic weaving loom
- No electricity used in hand spinning or hand weaving.
So no to fossil fuel use…. Saving valuable resource So no to green house gases, no to global warming A unique feel and look achieved by hand process that can be replicated through machines.
Dying/Printing
(a) Low impact GOTS approved dyeing (b) Herbal dying.
Herbal refers to the dyes that are used to dye/print the fabric. They are flowers/roots of plants like turmeric, onion, pomegranate, myraballams, manure, brazil wood, etc.
Why Herbal…..- No petrochemical dyes only plant extracts used as dyes
- So no water pollution; instead the waste after dyeing can be used as manure
- Medicinal properties may be acquired by fabric as many dyes have medicinally rich properties
- So no to allergies, septic, cancer and bad transpiration
- Unique colour palate & feel of cloth that can be duplicated through synthetic dyes
The major 7
processes in textile processing that are known to use only low impact
and hazardous chemicals, are now being introduced to a revolutionary
method of using only natural ingredients like: Sea-salts, oils,
medicinal plants, manure, etc. A related table showcasing the whole
process is entitled below:
| Process | Chemical/Natural/Low Impact/Vegetable Dying Process | Our Herbal Dying Process | | Bleaching | Chemicals
| Minerals | | Scouring | Caustic Soda | Sea Salts
| | Mercerizing | Chemicals | Minerals and Oils | | Dyeing | Chemicals and Extracts | Direct herbs derived from plants’ seeds, fruits, roots, flowers, etc. | | Dye Fixing | Formaldehyde, etc. | Oil and Natural Sources | | Finishing | Chemicals | Castor oil | | Washing | Detergents | Khar and Natural Soaps | | Innovation | Approx 8000 Chemicals are Used and No Medicinal Properties Claimed or Imbibed
| Very less amount of chemicals are Used. Mainly Herbs and Natural Resources are Preferred
|
We,
Herbal Fab, with all modesty, assure that in the herbal dyeing process
number of hidden benefits can be attained. Some of the essential
benefits are enlisted below:
- Waste can be used as Manure.
- Bulk production is possible.
- It increases the capacity of dyeing evenly to a length of over 1000 meters
with same shade through innovative controlled machine by replacing the
requirement of Sun and running water etc., which is considered as a
must in any such natural processes.
- Repetition and standardization of shades becomes possible.
- Versatility in process
can seen, through its ability to dye on yarns, towels, knits, fashion
fabrics like voile, silk etc., and various home furnishing items like
jute, etc, simultaneously.
- Offers competitive costs through bulk processing.
- No heavy metals like chrome, copper, etc. are used unlike natural and vegetable dyeing.
- It is extra smooth and good for transpiration, which helps in recovering various diseases.
- The colors used in the process are unique and cannot be duplicated with any other dyes, thus offer completely new shades.
- Highly promotes agriculture.
- Balances the ecology cycle, completely and effectively.
